Austria lies landlocked in the heart of Europe ringed by craggy peaks on three sides with its capital, Vienna, nestled almost at its eastern extremity in the fertile Danube valley about 50km from Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. At the crossroads of the continent the city evolved in a furnace of mercantile competition, military conquest, religious quarrels and political intrigue. Paradoxically, this millennia-long process has left not an empty shell but one of the urban glories of the world. Its past is there as an ever-present reminder of its wealth and power in stunning Baroque architecture, sprawling palaces, gracious boulevards and landscaped parks, immense public collections of art and sculpture and of course, its houses of classical music and opera.

Vienna is also exceedingly contemporary, not merely resting on its grand laurels, but reinventing itself with a cutting-edge focus on the 21st century exemplified by its vibrant commercial life, avant-garde arts community and hip bars and clubs set amidst Gothic backdrops. Vienna is built for walking, its Museum Quarter has enough to keep you occupied for several days and an efficient public transport system will easily take you to attractions in the suburbs. Couple this with the delights of cool-climate delicacies (coffee and strudel!), a World Heritage inner city wonderland and everywhere the strains of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler and Strauss and it will beguile you with its obvious elegance and subtle charms.
