Stuttgart, the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg, is located in Germany's south-west corner about an hour or so drive from its French, Swiss and Italian neighbours. Renowned as the headquarters of the country's industrial pride and joy, Mercedes-Benz, it is also somewhat surprisingly a remarkably green and picturesque city. Surrounded by parks, forests, orchards, vineyards and verdant pastures it is a wealthy and elegant regional capital.
Stuttgart Airport
Stuttgart International Airport is 13km from the city with a rail service (S2 and S3 trains) running between each at regular intervals (about 30 minutes for the trip). Taxis are around 25 Euros. Travel Guide
Stuttgart's citizens pride themselves on their sophistication and style typified by their preference for the wines of the surrounding countryside rather than the ubiquitous German brews. Motoring aficionados are spoilt by the presence of museums for both of Germany's great marques (Mercedes and Porsche). Art lovers have several excellent galleries to choose from and nature fans will enjoy the combined zoo and botanical gardens among a range of destinations.
Sightseeing Highlights
A temple to the offspring of Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, the Mercedes-Benz Museum is a sublime experience for motor-heads and an interesting excursion for those who don't quite get the obsession with automobiles. It tells the story of motorised transport from its birth to the sleek models of today through the prism of the three-pointed star. Right next to the factory that makes them is the Porsche Museum. Much smaller and not as interesting as the Benz version, it focuses on its racing variants but also has displays of the newest editions to Ferdinand's stable.
Schlossplatz is Stuttgart's nerve centre with a number of interesting attractions including the Konig Wilhelm Jubilee column which is flanked by beautiful fountains, the Konigsbau populated by buskers in warmer months and the Art Nouveau Kunstverein, a small but interesting art gallery. Adjacent to the Schlossplatz is Schillerplatz, in the centre of which is a statue of its namesake, the poet/playwright Friedrich Schiller. Also worth visiting there are the Instrumenten Museum and the gothic Stiftskirche topped by twin spires, the tallest structures in the city.
Rosensteinpark in itself is worth a visit to amble through its wooded glades and grassy verges but it also contains two of Stuttgart's treasures. Firstly the Schloss Rosenstein, once a palace, now the city's Natural History Museum, it tells the story of evolution with imagination and beautifully constructed exhibits. Secondly, the Wilhelma Zoo is one of Europe's best with an incredible array of habitats, animals from every continent and educational programs to inform and enlighten.
